I'm about to do my first water change.....Instead if trying to pour the new water into the tank...Couldn't I hook up one end of the cleaning hose to the bottom of a powerhead and the other end in my new water??? I figure I would stir up things as much..(BTW I will point the PH DOWN  )

You'd have to make darn sure the hose connection to the PH was tight or else
KA FLOOIE...its a mess ;).

I just use smaller (3.5) gallon buckets which are easier to control.

The PH may not have enough power to suck up the new water.

Try to put a PH in the new water with the hose on the output, and let it push the water out into the tank.

No, you are not, Lawdawq avatar will make me very close to that state ;)

I am so hurt. I;m a nice person, my bark is so much worse than my bite (as I floss my teeth with a rat tail file) ;)

Totally understand your problem... I usually have someone hold a small plate (like from a tea cup) underneat the water line, and I pour the 5 gallon bucket onto the plate. The plate diffuses the volume pretty good.

If you use this method, make sure the plate is below the water surface, otherwise it will splash all over the place. 8O

When I do my water changes I syphon the water out and pump the new water in. I can not pour the water either into the sump or tank. 3/8 hose works well on maxi jets.

What wazzle said. I use the same set up, works great with maxi-jets, just pump the water into the sump and away we go :)

I also use a maxi-jet 1200. It's a little slow going since it has to pump against close to six feet of head pressure. I considered getting a small mag to replace it.

I couldn't imagine pouring 30 gallons of water into my tank..... I'd probably spill at least 5.

I have an old rio400 I don't trust running in my tank. I attached a 1/2" ID hose to the nozzle and put the end of the hose in my sump. It is slow, but does the job and MUCH cleaner than dumping water in. I tried filling the main tank from the floor but the 5' head forced the little rio to stop.

If you find it slow put the bucket on a chair that will speed things up.
