I just started a new tank 60 gallon. I put the water in and the like a fool just dumped the sand in next and now for the last 4 days it has been very cloudy. I put carbon in a filter bag into the sump, wish it will clear it up quicker. How long will this take to clear up?

Thanks

It can take a week or more. You can get a blue house water filter canister with a micron sediment filter in it. Feed it with a strong powerhead and replace the filter when the flow drops to a trickle. It took about a day and a half and 4 filters to clean out my 120G.

I used a compact juwel filter with about 400L/h to clear the "clouds" in my 450L. It was done over night.

Do not worry yourself about this, when the tank gets a bacterial population, a bacterial film will form and evereything will eventually settle.

It will settle out in time and the smaller particles are, IMO good for the biological filter.

You could put something like a filter sock on the outflow to catch the particles, but just be aware it's going to clog up quick.

I'd just wait, it's easier

do you have poerheads in the tamk running too? If so turn them off, maybe they are not letting the water filter :?:

I have no idea what is taking so long with this clearing up. Everything is turned off except the pump that is in the sump. All I did was put sand in the tank that I did not rinse (stupid me) and now I have this cloudy mess that wont clear up.

I have a sump with a skimmer and just the pump to run the skimmer and take so called clean water back to the tank.

I also have a filter type sponge and some carbon in the sump.

thanks! :D

do you have pre-filters on your drop box? if so check them, you might have to clean all your fiters more often than you have been. Try cleaning them every couple hours or so

Run the skimmer and see if you can borrow a magnum canister filter with a micron sleeve or a diatom filter to remove the particulate.

Other than that, it can take a while for biofilm to develop on the particles - do you have some live rock in there to 'seed' bacteria?

No live rock I was going to order it when it cleared up. Should I order in now and put it in? Also since the tank is so cloudy I have not mixed in the salt yet either should I add the salt?

Thanks!

Wow, thanks for the tip about putting the salt in. Within a half an hour the tank cleared up so quickly. Not sure what the salt did but THANKS!!!!
