Whats up all?! Recently I have been hit with a proposal to buy a 55 gallon tank w/ stand, light, pump, & heater from a friend/co-worker of mine for a cool $200. Now, my question is, since I have a 29 g already set and trying to get the live rock settled(meaning to acquire the corraline algae) along with live sand, and all of the other inhabintants in the tank, would that be a wise move to transfer all of it to the possible vast land and area of a 55 g tank? If so, what is the best way to transfer all of whats in the 29g to the 55g?

In other tank topics and interests.....what type of coral, anemone, mushroom or polyp would any recommend to get? I am wanting to get some nice colors in my tank and tired of looking at the same, somewhat boring tank. I have recently acquired a white sebae anemone, which is pretty cool even though it is small right now, but other additions are very necessary.

$200 could be a great deal.. or it could be an unnessissary purchase.. its just according to what you get in the package. I gather that you are wanting to set up a reef aquarium.... is he selling MH or PC lighting.. NO or VHO? Does the deal come with a skimmer? MANY MANY ppl get out of the hobby because of failure that is brought about by the wrong equipment. Make sure you ahve a skimmer :) Most new ppl to marine aquaria start off with some sort of wet dry filtration.. that they will end up getting rid of.. only using LR and Skimmig for filtration.

As for what you can keep.... it will weigh HEAVILY on what lighting you can afford to put over your tank.

I think ppl can better assist you if you post what equipment.. (skimmer... fuge...lighting) u will be using :)

But WELCOME :)

SnowManSnow,

Currently, I know that he is currently using it for Freshwater Oscars. The type of pump he is using is unknown to me. I still have to check it out for myself to find out further about the lighting, pump, etc.
In my 29g I have a JBJ lighting system with both Actinic and the UV Bulbs. I have an Aqua C Protein Skimmer along with a Bio Wheel Filter(without the bio wheel) to clean the water. I know that I will have to get a new light, unfortunately, but the skimmer will work. Getting more live sand and live rock is not a problem. I am just worried about the possible transfer process and if it is recommended and possible to put what was in one tank to another.

FWIW, I bought a new 55gal. tank/stand/light/heater/hang on filter for $200 from a LFS, although that was a few years ago. You may want to shop around before paying $200 for a used set-up.

Knowing what I know now I would not get a 55 for a reef. To narrow for the height. You would probably be happier with a standard 75 or one of the 3 ft 50ish tanks. Just my 2 cents.

since you live in annandale ,va go over to wallys aquarium on LR turnpike, and they usualy have a 75g special for $99.00. you can build a nice stand for cheap. also you could go over to super pets they usually have ok deals on tanks. just stay away from the special "sale" tanks, even though they are very nice cubes. Just my $0.02....... Gary

Wazzel,
I havent seen the tank yet and I am betting that it is longer than it is tall. But, from what the seeler has told me, he said it was taller than it is wide so I will have to see.

Gary,
Living in No. Va, I do venture over to Wally's ona regular basis since it is actually right down the street. Super Pets is alright, but the last fish I got from there had developed ich badly. I normally go to Super Pets for equipment and Wally's for fish, LR, etc. I know that Wally's is having a big sale currently on tanks but since I am not constructively inclined I would have the hardest time trying to build a stand. However, I will not close the door on that option.

One of my first experiences with a reef aquarium was helping a good friend of mine move all of her fish, corals, LR, etc from a 55 gal to a 90 gal. Although she did have to deal with cloudy water for a day or two (which happens with any new tank), nothing untoward happened to any of the tanks' inhabitants.

If you do this you will want to make sure you are fully prepared for the move before you start. Have plenty of places to put living things when you're transfering sand and water from the smaller to the larger tank.

nothing wrong with moving to a larger tank. Your supply of sand and rock from your old tank should be enough for the larger tank. The UV light will kill everything in your tank.
