A few questions.. Yeah right I have about 50 but I'll spare everyone.

I'm coming from a 42 gal bow African cichlid tank. Very nice tank I had for about 5 yrs with a majority of the same fish that spawned like crazy.... but it's time to go to the next level due to our Den being renovated to fit more baby toys.

I have to get a new filter. I have an Eheim 2126 Thermal but it will not work for SW. I am taking the route of fish only so I think. Does anyone recommend the Eheim wet/dry 2227?

Big question.. If I wanted to mix fish and inverts what else do I need. Can I just add a protein skimmer with the Eheim wet/dry? or do I need more?

Do I need an reverse osmosis filter only if I have inverts? I know I need a UV either way I go.

Money is not much an issue well it is but let’s say it isn't for conversation...

If I wanted a 42 gal SW with some inverts with all the bells and whistles what do I need to order from Big Al's to start?

All the help would be much appreciated....

And welcome to the hobby! :P

For filtration, you really only need the fundamentals: Live rock and a protein skimmer. A wet/dry isn't necessary and is actually not recommended if you're going to have a full blown reef. If it's fish-only, then a wet/dry may help you deal with excessive fish waste.

Save the money of the wet/dry and buy the reverse osmosis filter. A RO filter is one of the best buys for marine aquariums, whether or not you keep inverts.

You don't need UV, and use of UV is actually out of favor these days. Again, save money there and invest with a good skimmer, RO filter, live rock, and good lighting. That should be your basis for starting a sucessful marine aquarium.
