I have a new tank set up with dry sand in it. I have never bought dry sand before, and I wanted to know if I will ever get all the same sand critters as I would with live sand. Do I have to add it myself? The sand in the tank is about 4in, and the refugium sand is about 6in. It's been about 2 months and I still dont see any activity in the sand, but everything else is perfect. So what do I do?

hi,

1. you could by a bag of live sand and add it. mix it up....

2. get a scoop from a friends tank that has good parameters and been established longer than 6mos.

3. add some cured live rock and let it go. try not to stock any fish in the tank. you want the micro fauna to get a good grip in there before you add fish and such...

4. you could also buy a bottle of ocean pod and a kit from premium aquatics...

lots of options...

Ben is correctamundo. I've always had success with option #2. Good luck! :)

#2 or a few "other" BB's have annula sand swaps. Those are excellent for obtaining a diversity of creatures.

Thanks guys! Yeh she is way into it aswell. She has a 20 gal reef with a matted pair of black saddle back clows, 35lbs of coral covered rock (every square inch) and 2in sand bed. She loves it. Whell i got a seven-eleven big gulp cup full of sand from a 8yr old 1200gal reef tank. Yes thats right, 1200gal. I think I will start there.

You guys are great! Thank you so much!

Trying not to be offensive, but it seems to me that like someone else said, not alot of females are interested in reefs?? The only women I get in the aquarium store where I work are tagging along with their boyfriends...dammit! Some of them are really hot! Try hard to talk to the guy and not the chick - who isn't the one buying!

Anyway - I started a 10 gal nano with dry CC (almost as fine as sand) and 10 lbs LR. The CC was well populated ENTIRELY from the LR before 3 months even went by.
Now I have so many spaghetti worms I have to cull them when I do a water change water - simply because I don't like seeing them on the glass. Angelfish / Discus don't want to eat them, by the way. There's also a load of transparent sea squirts.

Speaking from a position of having succeeded, I must also acknowledge my ignorance: maybe natural, harvested and imported live sand has a bigger biodiversity than what gets its load from LR.

Does anyone know?
