I am really new to this hobby. My first fresh water tank was about 6 months ago and then I purchased a complete 29 G saltwater tank from a friend about 2 months ago. Oh, how I am hooked. I have been reading everything I can get my hands on for about a month now. Overflows, refugiums, and Calcium Reactors, Oh My!

I purchased a 120 G tank this week on ebay, but it is not reef ready. I really like the idea of having most/all the equipment out of sight.

First, what is the best way to clean a tank before I start filling it. My RO/DI unit should be here soon.

Second, I want to drill the holes myself, to save some money and for the experience of it. I have read about using a Dremel to accomplish this and will make a trip to the HD this weekend. Any comments on how I should approach this will be a great help. I was also wondering about the long term affect on the strength of the tank. Assuming I go slow and do not crack the glass cutting the holes should the tank last as long as a reef ready tank?

Thanks for any input.

It depends on where you drill it. Lots of it just common sense (don't drill to close to the edge, etc.), and in many case, you can post diagram/pic before you punch a hole.

Hi, i have always cleaned my tanks with white vinegar and water... it helps remove all the hard wwater garbage and stuff. it disolves the nasties that have attached to the glass... helps to remove calcium buildup and such...

I usually do two cups vinegar to 3 cups water....

I fill the bathtub and soak the tank lids. i also use a brand new towel and clean moldings, trim and such....

hth.

welcome again, we are here to help!
