i think wetdrys are fine as long as you dont use any mats or sponges.
and clean the balls alot
but lets face it you wont clean them as much as you should. ^^ i dont htik any one does
please return the wetdry and get somthing else witht he cash.
when you feed your inverts you usualy turn off the skimmer for an hour

replace teh wetdry with a regular glass fishtank which should now be called a sump

if you wanna do a real nice job add baffles and make it into a fuge

also please dont waste your time
if you think you will be getting a bigger tank later cough up the cash and get it now
if not you will be wasting your time ( welly ou will learn alot but you know what i mean) and moneya s youwill need new lights and such
that 55 gallon tank will be a nice refuge and sump for the 230
and a skimmer rated at 125 is more like 55. they are overrated almost always
same with ro units it is rarely what itsays 10 gpd usualy means 7 and so on

as for the pump id say a mag 7 would be good and if you add a oceans motions device to it it will be even better. ( stay away from the scwd they are terriable at higher speeds) www.oceansmotions.com
and for the 230 id say a mag 12 on an ocean motions as well as a few closed loops

Ok if I take the filter back and get the skimmer. How am i suppose to cycle my tank cause your not suppose to use a skimmer while the tank cycles right? do I still need a pump for the skimmer if it hangs on the back of the tank hows that work?

You don't need a filter for your tank to cycle, and there is no reason not to use a skimmer.
From some of your posts I get the impression that your LFS might not be giving you very good advice, so you might want to get a second opinion on advice you get from them in the future, again just my opinion (and when you ask a question on this board you will get a ton of responses, not all of them will be good advice, so use your discretion in deciding whose advice you take.)

As to the skimmer, if it hangs on the back of the tank it will most likely be fed by a submersible pump in your tank.

Is that the main consern is the balls getting dirty. If thats the cause I can handle that. How often are you suppose to clean them once a week, once a month. Im not sure the destructions dont say.

The skimmer can be done either way. I'd rather it not be hung, I want as much of the stuff off the back and in the bottom as possible. as for the LFS thats why I'm here :D asking questions you should of seen there face when i told them i wasnt going to use the wet/dry it was a kodak moment.

depends on what you are going for.

and some skimmers hang on back of tank some sit in sump some are free standing
but wha ti ment to say was replace the wetdry with a fishtank. adn that is where you put your skimmer hearter carbon what ever.

what priceranged skimmer are you looking at

and lets say you do use a hangonback skimmer you can turn off the air intake so that it wont foam . that way it is only moving water.

and what is the name of the skimmer?

glad you got the buying bug out of you for now
oh with a 55 gallont ank you will mostlikely hate the layout of it... its so narrow lr is almost impossiable to make look perfect

i had a 55 gallon and it went well but i did alot of buying that i shouldent of done.
1 i got a wetdry. i loved my wetdry cause it helped keep the tank cool by allowing greater evap but i could of saved 100 bucks and made it my self

now with my 150 iam doing everything properly
first thing is dont listen to any ONE listen to everyone then sit down and think it out
2nd thing is fish list . show us it befor you buy anything. dont wanna overstock .
also dont buy a danmsul forcycling or testing unless you wanna keep that danmsul .. ( i happen to like mine)
3 get books but dont accept what they say blindly
4 dont buy the book called marine aquarium problomsolver. it is full of cr** and seems to be there to assist in selling uneeded things.

I have heard very good things about the coral life super skimmers.

My last advice in this thread will be to not take any advice from cjsrch. He runs off at the mouth and doesn't appear to me to have much clue what he is talking about.

what the hell is wrong with you that is 2nd time you said somthing to me. first was that i had no clue how ca disolves or somestuff like that.
and you hav,,,,,,, you know what im gonna be better then you and continue to help this guy out the best i can and try to ignore the fact that you belong at rc

gost what is the highest price that you are gonna spend on a skimmer. ( remember you got some extra to spend because you returned the wetdry) lets see if we can find you a better skimmer for the amount of money

as for cleaning the bioballs yes that is the main problom them getting dirty. people who know very little will try and say it is because they are arobic only but that means nothing

you said that you had FW so im sure you under stand the cycle including the denitrification right?
if kept clean ( id say every few days) they can do nothing but good (always clean using tank water so you dont kill the bactiria)

WOW....a $440 skimmer rated for 250 gallons for a 55 gallon? That is a very good suggestion if you KNOW you are going to upgrade. But there are a LOT of people that think they'll get a bigger tank after testing a smaller one, realize they take too much time and then sell everything at a big loss.

My advice would be to try out a smaller tank first to make sure you really want to stay in the hobby. Personally I would suggest a 58 gallon tank if you haven't already bought the 55. the 12" depth of the 55 is just too narrow for most people.

You are doing an EXCELLENT thing by getting online and asking questions, keep asking them! LFS are mostly for profit and love when you come back to upgrade, the one you are talking about sounds like one of the typical bad ones.

If you like reading, I would suggest something I put together:
The top 10 things you NEED to start a saltwater aquarium

Not as good, but still useful(Pay particular attention to tips #9 and #10)
Going saltwater vs freshwater and common pitfalls to avoid

Finally, here is my thread on RC...I have a thread here, but it is not nearly as useful and I'm too lazy to update it :) My thread on RC has a LOT of other sources and articles linked from the "experts" in the field...I'm just a tiny bit above a newbie really.

Good luck in the hobby and feel free to ask more questions!

Brian

PS... I completely agree AVOID RIOs...bad pumps...bad bad pumps. Maxi jet, mag drives and quiet ones are all excellent. I would recommend the quietone pumps over a mag drive as the mag drives produce more heat. SEIOs are OK (I have two), but they are made by the same company as Rio....so that is a caution. Oh yeah...I like MarineDepot and Dr Fosters, ordered from both and they are great.

Ok, I'm going to order some pumps today for wave makers and main pump. Ive been looking at Mini jet 606 82-183gph so i can put it into my wet/dry or a fish tank.(I havent decided yet on which im going to do) So i dont have them in side my show tank. Is this enough gph or should i go bigger one or two,for my main pump im getting a Mag-Drive 7 (700 gph) that should be good. I really picky about my tanks and i hate crap in them that dont need to be.
