hey all..im a long-time reefer but very low-tech so Im quite hesitant to even post..but i figure what the hell Ill never get support and answers if i remain silent :). The story is, I inherited this tank when a friend of mine got divorced, and her hubby left and abandoned his 55 gallon reef in their empty home. When I got it( i had to tear it down, move it, etc.), it was half evaporated, and the water was dark green. Ide kept freshwater tanks for years but knew next to nothing about reefkeeping. I still bear a large scar on my right forearm from a cut sustained from a dead coral..i couldnt see what i was dealing with in that murky water..it was SO nice having to keep working in that saltwater with that big cut on my arm BTW lol. When I got water in it( i used tap and red sea mix), i discovered a motley collection of corals and fish, mostly pacific but all kinds, with different needs i discovered. Many of the fish died soon after or were already dead.. although i still have the clownfish who was in the tank(Clyde). many of the corals lived for years and died off gradually because of my lack of experience and...cash basically. Ive only relatively discovered the necessity of keeping my chems right and lugging jugs of Ro home from the fish store..which Im doing religiously now..and things are getting better. My rock is acting like its a brand new tank and is growing me some hair algae..buts that beginning to die off in a record time of 3 weeks.
Most humbly do I post what im 'running' lol:
20 gallon tank
150 pounds of LR which Ive had in a 55 for over 10 years and recently moved to the small tank.
'aquaclear 300'..lol for water movement mostly and a couple of times Ive thrown some nitrazorb in there for my recurring nitrate issue.
2 power-glos and one marine-glo (Im still using traditional hood strips like that come with a tank from the store
4 powerheads, two behind the rock at the base, and 2 at the front of the reef, i get a lot of circulation.
Cheap CHEAP direct current skimmer(hagen)... barely does the job..i like to pretend Im running a berlin system lol.
I have a deep gravel bed- 3 inches in some spots and im using aragonite(lovely dark gray stuff I know nothing about)
'clyde'-15 year old(atleast) percula clown
'tinkerbelle' yellowtail damsel
1 lysmata amboininsis
3 pyramid turbos
2 blue legged hermits, 1 yellow
Sea mat
green clavularia
small candy coral(new)
and yes im COVERED in green striped mushrooms:(

Im saving for some power compacts..and im patiently waiting for a red-lipped blenny to show up in my fish store.
Its not as bad as it sounds, i have pictures hehe:

First off

:welcome:

They system you have would probably be good enough for mushrooms and the like. You may want to consider several upgrades to keep other types of corals or increase your fishload.

yea i know i know.. im a single mom not making much and expensive equipment has thus far been beyond me, however, im about to sell my house at which point im putting it right, new lights, a sump..venturi skimmer..i may go to a 29 so i can get some fresh rock in there. Im not overly interested in fish, beyond blennies and gobies, and when Clyde passes on perhaps Ill get a maroon clown.
I warn you when i go to re-furbish my tank, im going to be riding ya'll pretty hard for advice.

my new candy coral(lights just came on) had to take the dang picture 5 times...my clown is a ham lol:

Oh, and i only have tiny patches of the red and purple coraline algaes, how can i encourage it, beyond adding calcium etc.. is it a lighting issue?

Good ask plenty of questions. The best way to go in the hobby is slow and steady. It could be a lighting issue that is keeping the coraline from growing. Are you adding a two part additive like b-ionic or somting else? If you are just adding calcium you are missing half the equation.

Im not sure ive even seen b-ionic in the stores here..i use kalk, molyb-strontium, iodine, coral-accel and phyto-plex. Guess I should do some reading huh?

Where is "here" Texas is a big state. Sounds like a bunch of stuff you are using. I hope you are testing for them. I kept it simple and just dosed seachem reef builder and reef advantage calcium. Other thatn that I did a weekly water change.

I only use these things sparingly, literally when i remember them. The calcium I add once a month. I do weekly (about 20 percent) water changes.
I live in Arlington, the meat in the Dallas /Fort Worth sandwich.. there are no decent shops with reef supplies beyond the most common within 50 miles of me- I havent had online shopping capabilities in a while, but I will soon.
Our available corals look like crap too..i found one decent store within traveling distance, nice corals, nice fish but apatasia on every rock :(

Good deal on the water change. I would check the local reef club for corals. You will get better deals and better quality from them. You also know that what you are getting is atleast one generation tank raised.

Check these guys out.

Awesome..thanks Wazz!! yes -the guilt of knowing i just bought something raped from the dwindling ocean kinda kills the buzz... MY only excuse for not knowing about this or any other reef club is although Ive had this LR and such for years..i wasnt INTO it per se..i just kept it going(which is what happened to my pretty calcerous algaes).. After all it was just sort of dropped in my lap and Ive been embroiled in trying to get plants to grow in freshwater this whole time :)...i only very recently fell in love with my rock and decided to make something of it!

What is the purple mushroom-like things growing on your rock (the peppermint shrimp is on it)? I have those growing on my LR and I can't figure out what they are.

the mushrooms are nice, but they breed like roaches I swear, and they will takeover your tank( this takes awhile)..try to limit them to specific rocks..you can kill them by slicing them off( I have a scalpel just for this) or you can scrub them to death with a toothbrush :)

Cutting them off does not kill them. The part left on the rock will regrow. Unless you want mushrooms in your tank for the entire time you have the tank do not introduce them.
