I just put a live rock in the tank a week ago. As I put the rock in the water a pistol shrimp came swimming out pretty fast and hid underneath another rock. I looked like he set up a home the first day but the third day I lifted up the rock and he wasn't there. I haven't seen him since the first day. I haven't heard him at night snapping his claw so I think he is dead. Today I lifted up all the rocks and shook them around still no shrimp. I hope he is not dead. Do you think he is dead because of lack of an acclimation?

That's a possibility; although sometimes these guys can keep quiet for days; other times they snap up a storm. I have one in my tank and he's pretty cool--when I see him! Mine also tends to snap more frequently at feeding time.

Sometimes he is snappier than others; there have been times that I thought mine might be dead--then he starts snapping again.

Just be patient, wait and see. :D

What exactly did he look like, cause i have this gray colored shrimp that lives in a large piece of rock and sticks his head out during feeding time, kinda ugly looking and i hear some snapping once in a while. The crazy thing is though i just switched tanks and I placed my rock the shrimp rock included in the new tank dry and then proceeded to fill the tank with chlorinated ice cold water, then added my salt and started heating it up.(I know I know, basically killed my rock, I am still a rookie) That little sucker is still alive and kicking in that same piece of rock, so I am sure yours might still be alive as well.

Critters are often tougher than we think they are.

If the shrimp had a deep enough burrow in the rock, then it acted like insulation and the temp probally didnt "swing" as much in the center of the rock.

Its amazing how Life always seems to find a way huh?

Now on the other hand, if you had been doing your best to keep it alive it would have probally died...

He was a Randalli Pistol. It's been a while now and I really haven't heard him snap. I am afraid that if he is dead then shouldn't I get rid of his body? I am afraid of an amonia spike if he is dead. Have been checking parameters and they have been fine. I'll just keep my fingers crossed.

I have great news....I saw the pistol shrimp today. He came out when I was feeding some Brine. I am so happy. He doesn't live in the same rock, but one on the opposite side of the aquarium. God I am so happy. :D :D
