I am going to purchase titanium heaters. I was wondering if 2 500 watts will be enough. meaning, i know normally enough, but could i get myself in trouble if one fails? I'll spend the bucks for a 3rd if anyone thinks its necessary. during the winter i think they will run all night till lights come on. oh yeah, not like I never post but its a 180 tank.

That's about right for wattage. Are you going to use a controller?

I wasn't going to, but it sounds like it might be a good idea if you took time to ask me that question. :) I have looked at the aquadyne last week, but wasnt sure if it was just overkill for me at the start.

Recommendations by you are appreciated as always, or feel free to point me in the right direction and I'll go do my homework.

By the way, I have been keeping a key points log for myself so i don't lose all this information. especially until I actually get my feet wet, eerrr or hands wet i mean.

The only problem with high wattage heaters is when they stick 'ON'. It doesn't happen often but when it does they can cook a tank a lot faster than a bunch of smaller heaters where only one is defective.

A controller will turn off the heater even if it's stuck 'ON'.
