Hi,

I have had my skimmer running for a little over a week and am having some problems with it. I received my current set-up as a freebee from a realative getting out of the hobby. (It is the 40 gal that I have posted about before regarding cycle stuff) Well, from the reading I have been doing here the skimmer is old school as heck! It is a Red Sea Berlin Air-Lift 60. everything is intact, clean and operational. It is the hang in the tank type with the wood air stone. Now, I am planning on fish only for now and don't have the $$$ to buy a new one so I need to try to work out the bugs. Basically, it bugs me beacause when set up per the Red Sea manual it allows micro-bubbles to escape out the bottom from the "air return skirt" into the tank. I pushed the air stone up into the body of the skimmer more and it seems to help, also turning the pump down helps too. Right now the stone is about halfway up and the HI-TECH 380 pump is at 75% If I turn the pump to 100% the bubbles push all the way up into the cup and fill it with water in about 30 seconds. (Even when the stone is set as depicted in the instructions) For the last couple of days the foam has remained hovering just below the cup with nothing being collected. The tank has only been running for a little over a week. When this skimmer was set up previously in the tank at my Father-in-Law's I don't ever remember micro bubbles or any other issues with it. Any suggestions? (buying a new $500 skimmer doesn't count, haha) Thanks so much ----Rob

I would push the stone all the way to the bottom to start and cut the pump back. If you are happy the way it is now just let it run for a few more days. If it was cleaned with anything other than plain tap water it may take a while for whatever was used to break down.

I ran one of them for years they work great for low$$ and free stuff better then nothing. I found that I had to use the red sea replacment air block. I would soak the new one in water overnite set the air pump so the bubles were right at the bottom of the cup also it takes them forever to break in. O also watch your water level in the tank and try to keep it right at that water level line.
