Please tell me I am just paranoid.

I just used RowPhos for the first time. Used per the package instructions utilizing the filter sock that comes with it. It said not to wash or rinse the media. As soon as I plopped the sock in my sump there was an explosion of dark colored cloudy stuff that was so bad it limited the visiblity in my tank. No chunks came out just what I am guessing was micro dust or something.

Is this a normal reaction using Rowphos????

It's very "dusty" - many people who use it regularly rinse before use despite the directions. I don't use it myself so I can't say what effects the residue might have when it settles out (if any).

If you're interested in trying to get it out of the system and have a skimmer try cranking it up (run wet) but keep an eye on it. If you have any sort of diatom/micron filter that would be ideal. If you have a sump you might be able to use some filter floss, etc. after your overflow drain to pick it up.

I did the same thing the first time I used it. From then on I rinse it. I never had any problems from the first clouding event, but I had it in my fuge, and I took the fuge off the main tank untill things settels first.

FWIW, I use phosban...it does the same thing... it clears up in a bit with no ill effects.
