Hi,

Thanks so much for all of your help so far on my 40gal. Is there any possible way to set up a surface skimming operation on a sump-less tank?
I have a skimmer and live rock running and a Aquaclear Hang on filter W/O media for extra circulation. I would like to somehow set this up to take water from the surface, maybe with a little overflow box in the tank connected to the inlet tube. I just need it set so the water level can slightly go down and not kill the pump. I don't have an auto top off fill system. Bottom line is I don't mind a DIY project so long as it doesn't cost a lot and can be done to my existing system. Any tricks or ideas in this case? Sorry to be so old school in my set-up! Thanks ----Rob

I bought the fluval skimmer and hooked it up to a power head that goes to my protein skimmer. It took me a while to get it set up nicely but it takes about 50% surface water and 50% mid-level water.

Works like a charm. I never have any surface skum on my water.

Yes. You need to put a box arount the pump for the skimmer. Open at the top. If you do this you need to keep the water level of the tank constent so you do not burn up the pump.

With the fluval you don't need to make a box. The cup that skims floats and could move up and down about 5 inches. This allows for different water levels in the tank.
