Here are some thing to consider. The water level in the sump needs to be deep enough for the skimmer to operate properly. On top of that you need enough volume to catch the water that will drain from the tank when the power goes out. Make sure you add some contengency in case you add a bigger pump or get a bigger skimmer.
With that being said you should get the biggest sump you can. Extra water in the system always helps and it is better to have the extra capacity for the unforseen events that do happen.
