Tank size/Sump size ratio

Straightfoward as the title states...
Are there any basic guidelines size of the sump to maximize the benefits. I have a 150 gallon tank.

The only real guideline is "Larger is Better."

This is based on the rule, one of the few 'rules' in the game, that more water volume is always better.

Another way to look at it though is to ask what you'll put in the sump. At least, you need room for skimmer/heater and any other equipment.

If you make it big enough, then you can also use it as a refugium with macro algae. And again, bigger is better.

Here are some thing to consider. The water level in the sump needs to be deep enough for the skimmer to operate properly. On top of that you need enough volume to catch the water that will drain from the tank when the power goes out. Make sure you add some contengency in case you add a bigger pump or get a bigger skimmer.

With that being said you should get the biggest sump you can. Extra water in the system always helps and it is better to have the extra capacity for the unforseen events that do happen.
