My wife is a little sad today she bought a mated pair of clowns she was trying to get to host a Torch coral we have. So all was well last night they were both happy as clams. Woke up this morning and one of them had gotten too close to the main drain that feeds our closed loop and it must have pinned the little guy against the drain until he just could not run water thru his gills.

My question is this how do the rest of you deal with protecting your fish from falling or being pulled up against the main drain. See my loop pulls from the bottom and the sump is fed from the corner overflow. I was wondering if anyone makes or I can DIY a larger cage or something to create a larger area around the stand pipe. My thinking is if I can come up with something that gives maybe two more inches the suction will not be as powerful as to pull unsuspecting critters in. Any input?

Not exactly a newbie question, but I'll take a stab...

If you're not willing to go through the maintenance hassle of cleaning a sponge every so often then maybe the next best bet would be to DIY something like you said.. - If you DIY a plexi cage, just need to bear in mind it has to have quite a bit more slots for flow than the original or you're right back to where you were before with less in-tank real estate.

It sucks losing fish, sorry for your loss. At least you know how it happened though and can move forward from there.
