thinking about replacing my sponges in the sump with a filter sock. currently the line from my overflow is about 1 or 2 inches under water to reduce noise and splash. if i incorperate a sock, can the filter sock be underwater, or must it be suspended in the air?

I don't know about others but tried using filter socks for a few weeks and it gets clogged pretty easily and difficult to clean. I reversed them and rinsed it out for quite a while but the water backs up after a day or two. On the + side, they do eliminate bubbles and help get the water super clear as long as the filters are clean. I just took mine off this morning and trying to find another solution.

if you could buy extra sock, bleach in a bucket over night, rinse reel good. make some holes at the bottom of the sock, it dirty reel fast, so the water wouldn't spill over the top

filter socks

i was using them but they need to be changed after 2 day's. and got tired of doing it. if your sump has bubble trap's the bubble's dont matter. currently i have the drain sumerged into sump. this also helps keep the debris in the sump stirred up

Possible solution - several filter socks. Change them every couple of days, then run them in a washer with cold water and no bleach/detergent. Works pretty well for me.

I have a bunch of filter socks i use. I simply turn them inside out and toss them in the washing machine with bleach when i get down to my last filter sock. They clog up quick because they are very efficient and trapping detrius which i think is what we all want :)

I used 2 regular media bags. But you gotta wash them out every few days before detritus and other rotten things build up and start rotting. I would just wash them under cold tap water.
