I just moved recently and the tap water is horrible (extremely hard water, high levels of Nitrate, and I wouldn't be suprised if it still has copper pipes - the house is pretty old!)

I've been looking into getting a RO/DI water filter, but the question I had was, will it filter out the Nitrates? Is there any hope, or should I stick with store-bought water?[/i]

Yes, a properly working RO/DI will remove the nitrate (along with most of the other impurities).

Whether you're buying it from the store or using your own RO/DI to make purified water (my preference) I recommend checking each batch with a TDS meter to make sure it's pure before using it.

I got my RO from Home Depot. I does the job, not much more (if any) then the eday models, and I get a handy undersink pressure tank.....the water suck here too and use it for drinking water.

My unit is little small 10GPD, but get the job done. Lowes has a 24GPD for arounf the same price.

There is nothing wrong with having copper pipes in the house as long as they are undisturbed. They won't add anything to the water.

RO unit will clean your water up fine, and its cheaper and easier than buying store bought water. Trust me, I buy 7 cases of store bought water for drinking at our house every week and its a pia to carry around...
