I changed the skimmer in my old tank because my old skimmer was developing a leak in it (repairable, but not easily).

The instructions on the new skimmer said to wait 3 days to a week as a "break-in period". It's been two weeks today and the skimmer isn't producing foam yet. I would like to think that this is due to my "pristine" water, but I'm guessing that is not the case. Should I take the skimmer back, or does it sometimes take longer than a week to start producing?

There is a light foam at the surface right above the level where the water runs off back into the tank, but the top of the collection cup is a good 5" above that.

Much thanks in advance,

Ben

I did a little more research and turns out other people are having similar issues with the same skimmer (SeaClear 100). Looks like a poor skimmer that takes a lot of tinkering to get working. We'll see.

I went from a Seaclone "skimmer" (if you can call it that) to a Euroreef a handful of years ago..

Oh..

How long did it take to start producing skimmate you wonder??

About 2.5 seconds.

What brand(s) of skimmers are you talking about here?

Ahh.. - See, I shoulda been a few more minutes patient eh?

No idea what a Seaclear is.. - I'll have to look that one up I guess.

Yep.. - Definitely "buyer beware" when it comes to skimmers.. - Not all are created equal by ANY stretch!

I'm currently working on setting up a new tank (on it's way). I purchased an in-house brand skimmer from a pet shop. The owner of the store (who I trust very much) says it works great. There is an optional needle wheel impeller for 25 bucks. Are they worth it?

I have a EuroReef 135 this thing rocks. Took me a day or two to get it dialed in but man this thing fills the cup every two days. Pricey but well worth the extra dinero

For $25?

Definitely.
