I have just bought a Aqua Medic 250w single metal halide unit to suppliment my 4X 96w T5s as I have decided to try out some easier corals and bin the FOWLR- only idea.

My problem is this: The AM unit comes with cabling to suspend the unit from the roof. Without going into too much detail, although this is possible, its very difficult and will also intefere with the removal of my hood.
My 2 T5 units are on homemade glass supports resting on the bracing glass panels. The MH will also fit nicely over the gap between the braces, but I dont know what to make the supports out of. The unit is 60cm (23.5") long with the globe and reflector only taking up the middle 30% of the length. The shape of the MH unit does not lend itself to a similar brace to the prev ones I made and because of the short length I will need to secure each end to the brace to minimise the chance of knocking it into the water. The unit has 4 small screws at each end that would suit to use to secure the fixture but then I cant use 1/2" glass. Galvanised plate steel comes to mind, perspex would be better but I dont know how much heat this thing will generate and whether it will affect glass/ silicone or perspex... Intuitively I think not, but I just want to make sure before the new fixture goes swimmimg and fries my tank...any thoughts or suggestions, any one have a similar problem before?
Thanks in advance....

Perspex is acrylic, right? Yeah, acrylic is a no-no with MH due to the heat.

Thanks Seven, Ok thats out! As far as I know, our perspex= your acrylic, any thoughts on a glass base with a aluminium plate siliconed on, drilled to fit? Will the silicon and glass survive the heat? Is it a bad idea to be using aluminium near my tank? (stupid question, I'm sure- sorry! )
