It's time I look at a calcium reactor, I have an imported showtank with no sump(i do not wish to have one). Is it possible to have a calcium reactor underneath my in my cabinet or not? I always see that people have their ca reactors next to their sump, is it possible to have it so far underneath the tank or does the "drip part need to be on the same level as the ca reactor.

Please any help would be great. I also dont understand what the pump next to the reactor does, does it suck water from the tank or does it push water into the tank or both, sorry for the dumb question but I just started to convert my tank into reef and would like to do it right from the beginning, without waisted a $hit load of cash on stuff I dont need. (have done that enough)

YOu dont need a sump for a CA reactor. You can feed it from the tank and drip it back into the tank.

THere is a pump in the tank/sump that feeds the tank water to the reactor. The pump attached to the reactor is a recirculation pump. You need a CO2 tank to inject CO2 into the reactor. The CO2 slowly disolves the media (aragonite) and releases Calcium.

The effluent (retrun to tank) water is usually a slow drip.

IHTH

thanks, i though the reactor has it's own pump and would be sucking water from the tank??????

also i know the water gets dripped back into the tank, but does the reactor need to be on the same level as the tank. Can the reactor's outlet be more than a meter above the reactor itself??????

I would think so as long as the feed pump can push the water back up.

Depends on the design, some work that way, some does not. Same for the water level issue. Most need a feedpump like the AquaLifer to work well.

thanks rob, but i'm looking for one that would work for me and not on a sump. Like seven said not all of them works the way I want one that would work if i put it under my tank. iow it must be able to suck water from my tank without a powerhead inside the tank and be able to have an outlet 1meter higher.

Not a problem. I have not seen a ca reactor with out a feed pump. Not to say there is none I just haven;t seen it.

If you are only going ot have soft corals you probably dont need a CA reactor. B-Ionic or Kalk should be enough.
