filtration - what comes first?

I'm setting up a 40-gal drilled tank (the sump in the rear of the tank) and I plan on housing my skimmer in the biggest chamber of the sump while having a 10 gal refugium going as well.

My question is should the water go through the protein skimmer first, or into the refugium, or does it matter?

It doesn't really matter but if you have the skimmer first and the fuge last you give pods a better chance of making into the display from the fuge.

I also do not think it matters. If it was me I would run the skimmer first.
