Hi all

Ive been advised several times that in my new tank I hope to start soon (24" x 12 x 14" - approx 80 litres) I can go without a protein skimmer as its so small.

I've been advised as long as I religiously do my weelky 10% changes I can not worry about a skimmer - and save a lot of valuable space.

Can you please give your thoughts and opinions as I'd rather be 100%

:welcome:

Whether or not you need a skimmer is really dependent on the bioload in the tank, what you are keeping in the tank (does it require more pristine water?), how often you feed and your maintenence schedule. The higher the bioload, the more benefit a skimmer would be.

I've had heavily stocked 6-20 gallon nanos without skimmers but I'm a believer in 40-50% weekly water changes ;) which does make a difference.

Possible. Either you monitor the ammonia regularly, or do regular water change.

Not only can you go without a skimmer, they are pointless on such small tanks where a water change only takes 2 minutes.

I wouldn't bother running a skimmer on anything smaller than a 20 gallon.
