Does anyone know the advantages to growing live algae to condition the tank? I know that algae is good for rotifers and other inverts and maybe growing live brine shrimp, but is there an advantage to using/placing them directly in the tank?

Thanks.

Phyto is whats good for rotifers, brine and other filter feeders, but its not something you'd want in excess in the tank.

Macros will compete with with other (nuisance) algaes (like hair) for nutrients, so yeah, it can be beneficial to keep them, but I don't consider them a significant part of "conditioning" the water.

The idea of using an algal turf scrubber just doesn't sound appealing to me I guess. :D

I think there are many advantages, besides the advantages of the enormous filtration capabilities, it's gorgeous!

It does pose a few challenges, though....

Thanks for the reply. I heard that some people use algae to condition tanks. I wasn't sure how they contained or limited the algae growth once the tank is established so I thought I'd ask. I know that it can over run a tank and even cover coral and other livestock.

thanks.

If your macro starts over running your tank/ sump its a simple matter of taking a pair of scissors or a knife and pruning it, 2 minutes and a wet arm later and you determin how much you want.... easy!
