I was wondering if there are any good rules of thumb when it comes to stocking different forms of corals. I undertstand that some corals have sweeper tentacles to defend themselves and their territory, but are there other factors one should consider when mixing and placing corals relative to one another (lighting and water flow aside)?

Any input is appreciated.

Thanks,
Candy

Basically you've hit on most of the important issues. I'd just add that if you leave a little more room for each coral than you think it'll need, everyone will be happier in the end. Good luck-Jim

Candy,

Generally you can keep coral "families" together.. for instance lobophillia (spelling is wrong i think) like torches, hammers, and frogspawns can be kept in close proximity. Most SPS corals can be kept close as they don't generally have long sweepers. One thing that comes to mind that you do want to try and avoid is keeping a leather coral of some sort in close area of an sps.

I wouldn't keep my euphyllias close to anything else. Definitely not my trachyphyllias (used to be lobophyllias). Matter of fact, I don't let any of my LPS too close to each other because all of them display some serious tentacles especially at night with the exception of maybe my fungia.
