Hey Reefers

I got a small dilemma. I try to nuke my LR at least once a month with a spare powerhead. Sure raises a lot of junk. The problem is it seems to settle right back down and I could do it again the next day and still have the same amount of junk floating around.

I am using a Dolphin 3100 ampmaster for my return and a Sequence dart for my closed loop. The tank is 120 gallons and has generous flow thruout the tank and rock structure. Tank has a single corner overflow to the sump.

My question is this.... how can I get a more effective way to get more of the detritus and junk out of my system?? any creative methods I am overlooking that you may be able to share with me??

Is it detritous or LR sediment? Any way, Try a filter sock followed up by filter floss and then a black filter sponge in the sump during your storms. You'll catch it sooner or later.

I agree with the above. I also have a small powerhead blowing across the bottom in back of the LR and the detritus/sediment piles up in the corner fo the tank. I siphon that out with water changes.

Ya know Duane it does seem to have sand or tiny rock particles mixed with detritus. Does LR disintergrate? Why would it do that?

Does this mean that it will eventually wizzel away to dust :)

I will try what you guys suggested. Hey Duane when do you want to hook up? I would like to meet you soon.

Maybe you can help me out some with my setup. Do you still have the yellow polyps?

The live rock I ordered from Dr. foster&Smith had alot of sediment on and in it when it arrived. Even after rinsing it some made it into my system. Mostly my fuge. I have tried to blast it into the system so my filters could do the work for me but it settled right back down before the current could take it away. I figure, If isnt detritous it probably isn't hurting any thing. In your case, you may have to siphon it out a little at a time during water changes befor the tank grows in if it is causing you grief in the display tank.

Yes I definately can harvest some polyps for you. I traded in the large colony but it was infested with red bubble algea anyway. If you want. I can harvest some pom pom xenia if your willing to fight that plague as well. The xenia is a pain in the arsse, but it sure catches everyones eye and the wife will like the pink. Mine does.
