It's trying to build more tube out of mucus and sand, just leave it be and it should do okay.

I thought the tube is form from secretion, not from sand and mucus like their cousin? :?

There could be something nearby that is pushing sand into it at night. I would left it higher off the sand to see if this is the case.

It is, it forms a calcarious tube via sectretion. But I've had them make a lil protective "covering" with mucus and debris until the more perminent one is formed if something is hassling it. Of course I could be totally wrong.

I never see one that make a temporary covering from sand... but I never see many of them like some of you. My guess is that there is a goby that dump sand over it... any fish in the tank?
