hi i am new to reefkeeping and was after a little help , i have a 33g tank and was in the process of setting up a sump , but with the pump i have an eheim 1028 you have to connect both input and output to the pump so if this was placed in an sump with caulerpa would it take the nutrients or just pump the same tank water aropund

First of all, :welcome:

Im not quite clear as to what your question is. For a sump, You need to have overflows from the display that drain into the sump. Then a return pump to send the water back into the tank from the sump. The water in the tank will keep at a constant level and "overflow" due to water displacement from the return pump down below. The drains should be placed at one end of the sump, and the return pump at the other end.The intake of the return pump is either open ( if it is a submergible pump) or connected to piping (if is external) through a bulkhead.
The water flow through the middle will be enough to keep the caulerpa circulated tho remove nutrients from the water passing through..

Are you going to run a skimmer?

i have a pipe going from the tank to the sump but the gravity of that is quicker than my ehein 1048 pumping back to the tank so the sump would over fill

there are a few things to keep in mind. #1 is that you want your overflows in your tank (the line running INTO your sump) to be large enough to keep up with the pump that is in the sump. If your sump pump pumps more water than the overflow can handle your display will fill up and overflow. That being said you WANT your line to the sump to be quicker than the sump to the main tank.

#2 Keep your return high enough in the display tank so that when you cut power it doesn't back siphon enough to fill and overflow your sump. Because of this most people don't run their sumps at a full level. I run mine about half full. WHen the power goes out about another quarter of that runs into the sump.

I remember when I first set up my sump .. its confusing! Just keep asking questions.
