Rocks from ocean

Can I pick rocks from the ocean? (Maine) There are some beautiful rocks I would like to put in my tank. Do you boil them first? If it is possible, please let me know. Thanks

From cold water off Maine, most of the critters going to be dead in the tropical reef water, so you may want to make sure it won't make a stink in the tank. Make sure the rock is not near any sewage outlet, or recent boat fuel spill.

For the hassles, I won't bother with it.

Plus most of that rock is granite - Too dense to be of any biological value to a SW tank.

I personally wouldnt reccomend it. I grabbed a bunch of rock from the St Johns River/atlantic ocean connecting point and the hitchhkers were crazy. Plus theres the risk of atlantic diseases and pacific immunities, but f you find rock you think is cool ckuck it in freshwater and that will take care of the hitchhikers.

Well Im no geologist but I do know granite contains malachite which is a metal. And it seems reefs do NOT like metal. THen again he never said he was talking about granite.

Yeah, the late ice age pretty much make marine nothing but granite with 1/4 of top soil if it is not submerged under water.... :wink:

I don't think granite, affect the pH much at all.

No... I am not talking about granite. There are some beautiful rocks in upper northern Maine.
