Just curious if anyone could help me, I have a hippo tang, have had him almost 1 year, seems very healthy eats healthy, very active he is about 2 1/2". I have just stated to notice that he has started to get a couple of white dots. I was wondering if they could be parasites and what to do to fix the problem. Do I need a hospital tank to fix the problem? I have several other fish that are fine, havent added anything to the tank in a few months, water quality is very good / stable. Thanks for the help.

Tank size?

Having a hippo in a tank with not enough swimming room can be very stressfull to the fish.

Several fish and a tang in a 46G?

You may have some overcrowding issues.

What di you have in terms of livestock?
Skimmer?
Sump?

I hate to say this, but you may need to find a new home for the hippo.

Most say at least 4 feet of swimming space for these fellas.

Hippo is a pygmy, wont get any bigger so the LFS tells me. I also have a pair of percs, and a coral beauty. I have a wet/dry system rated for a 125gal setup, My tank is a 46gal, about 30-40lbs live rock, as well as a Euro-Reef rs80 skimmer. a pair of cleaner shrimp several snails and hermits...... Thats about it.

Pygmy Hippo??? WTF??
I think he will be fine in your tank for now, You should think about Up-sizing if you want to keep him for a long time. If he gets over 4"-5" you should probably get rid of it.

They are Ich magnets. I have had a Hippo 2 years and he will get some White Dots (Ich) every once in a while (Usually when I stress him out). He just visits the Cleaner Shrimp stations and they take care of it.

An old Reefer at the LFS gave me a couple of Tips on Tangs when I first bought one (This was about 5 yrs ago, when I bought a beautiful Purple Tang... It is still alive BTW)

PUT HIM ON A STRICT FEEDING SCHEDULE!! also, Buy a couple of cleaner shrimp that will help alot. Remember--Keep it on a Routine, Sudden change can cause stress which in turn makes them more susceptible to an Ich Breakout.

This is my food schedule (I try to do this daily):
9:00 AM- small feeding of Frozen Mysis Shrimp
11:00 AM- small feeding of Formula 2 Frozen food
4:00 PM- small feeding of Spectrum Thera +A (small pellets)
8:00 PM- Mixture of Cyclopeez, Mysis, DT's Oyster Eggs & some more Spectrum if I want.

Every other day:
9:00 AM- Add a piece of Green Marine Algae and some Cheato from my Fuge
8:00 PM- Remove uneaten Algae

**Remember- These a small portions, Try not to OVERFEED..

If all else fails, You may want to give him a Dip.. But keep in mind this is very stressful to the fish and may do more harm than good. You have a 50/50 shot with dipping.

Good Luck!!

nice feeding schedual, you dont go to work??
Any way your fich has ich, a 46 gal aquarium, you have a huge overcrowding issue way to much stuff in there sounds like you are doing a mostly fish only anyway and with that much live rock you have about zero swimming room think about getting a sump and puttting some of your live rock down there

I have never heard of a pygmy hippo either...

I still vote for stress. I would not do the FW dip either FWIW.

Self Employed- But I was giving an example of my schedule. If you have to "go to work" then just work a feeding schedule around your hours.

Couple of yrs ago- When I actually had to work for someone else. I would feed at 7:30 AM, 12:30 PM, & 6:30 PM

I love seeing WTF in replies, how come that is not in the library for abbreviations? anyhow, I think I agree with everybody here. Interesting post about the feeding schedule causing stress. Sometimes I get the shakes if I'm hungry and don't eat for a few hours. Imagine a little guy with A much higer metabolism. very interesting. Anyhow I work also , but they do have automatic feeders, and you could use a lettuce clip with some seaweed on it before you go to work, they will feed on that for a while.

Tangs can be a pain in the @ss.. As soon as I get a bigger tank (Prob a 210 AGA) I'm going to start searching for a Black Long-nose and Achilles to add to the Tank.
