Wanted to introduce myself...and some questions too.

Hi everyone, I'm new here and wanted to go ahead and introduce myself. I have very recently become interested in reef keeping and I am looking into starting a nano reef of my own in the near future. I was bit by the bug after my roommate restarted his 55G tank. Originally he had used the 55G as a FOWLR tank but went away for school and stopped the tank. He’s aiming for a full reef now and it’s already looking great and has really gotten me interested in the whole hobby. I just started researching this week and have spent a good amount of time on the forums here at reefs.org browsing and beginning to learn. Originally I had picked out a 24G Nano Cube DX as my tank of choice but have since weaned away from that because of the limitations it imposes on equipment and lighting I can buy. I have since picked out the 24G AquaPod w/ the 70W HQI metal halide system.

I have a few basic questions (I am far from any purchases at this point, just doing research now) about the tank and was hoping others could chime in with their experiences. Is the lighting included adequate for SPS or am I still limited? Does the power head included provide enough flow within the tank or would it be wiser to upgrade the pump? Would I be better off buying a bare bones tank and adding additional equipment to it? I’d prefer to have the tank be as compact and all-in-one as possible but if this isn’t the best way to go about it I am totally open to any other suggestions.

I haven’t picked out any specific corals as I haven’t done extensive research in this area yet, but I don’t want to be limited in the selections I can make based on the lighting included with the AquaPod. The fish I have definitely decided on are a pair of black and white perculas to begin with. If there is enough room I would also like a bicolor pseudochromis as well.

I just purchased a few aquarium books from amazon yesterday (some suggested here at reefs.org) and want to finish reading those before I make any more decisions. Any suggestions are welcome!

Before getting into this hobby: Are you rich? Do you have any known addictions towards spending money? Can you restrain yourself from buying "sweet stuff" Just kidding. One piece of advice I have........STUDY.

i had a aqua pod 24 gallon, the pump needed upgraded. it did not put out enough flow in my opinion, but there is room to put a slighty bigger pump in it's place. i also found out that the tank temp was hard to keep in range. my tank temp ran at about 84 - 86 degrees. i really liked the design of the tank, but the filtration system was also a nitrate factory. and in the end my pod cracked right down the curved part of the glass. and currant did replace for me quickly. i really liked the idea of the pod but i just had bad luck with mine.

you obviously dont have to be RICH to be in the hobby haha.. im a point and case here. I actually did a poll to see what the incomes of our reefers here are a few weeks ago Most of us are just average joes. Heck I even bought a set of 2004 Big Bertha Irons last night online and I'm still in reefing.

Most of the cost comes initially. That being 1-skimmer 2-tank 3-lighting. After those expenses you just build your tank gradually as you can afford it (or as the wife sees fit for you to burn another 50-70 bucks on your new "pet")
