ok.. so I am stupid..

I am assuming that it would go inside the tank?
How low would it need to sit.. and what do you use for a lid if you have that monstrosity sitting in the tank? It seems to me that a glass lid wouldn't fit on the tank right once it is installed..

Or am I wrong and they go outside of the tank and hang on the back? looking at the intake.. it would seem that the power head would force it to be used inside...

I was looking at them at the LFS.. no one there could give me the same answer or really had a clue (rocket scientists that they are).

Thanks for the education! Grrrr.. I really need one!

HOT = Hang On Tank. The outside of the tank. What type of skimmer do you have?

i don't have one yet.. I was just looking...

So I am assuming it would need some plumbing pipe to make it go where it needs to?

The one they had there (yeah.. only one kind) comes with a power head.. I opened the box.. no instructions.. and it looks like the powerhead fits right into the intake on the protein skimmer.. they called it a "plug and play".. but I don't see how unless it fits inside the tank

and they didn't have a clue... grrrrrr

The HOT skimmer I used to have had a pipe coming into the tank to syphon the water into the chamber that it will be skimming. You would more than likely have to prime this pipe to make the suction and adjust the valve "tuning in" to make the wet or dry skim.

Does this make any since to you?

yeah.. that makes sense to me.. but for it to be a "plug and play".. that pipe is non existant

my ex used to be a plumber.. so I could probably rig a pipe like that (I used to help him occasionally on jobs).. do you think it would it work if I rigged a pipe like that?

You might want to take a pic of the one at the LFS and I can see how this thing would work. Do you recall the name brand? Are you sure it's a HOT? Or is it an "in-sump" type skimmer?

it had a hanger on the back of it with thumb screws

my husband just told me he saw a picture on the box where it showed it being used IN the tank with part of the skimmer suberged.. so I guess I need to go back to the LFS and take a note pad with me!
