I had a blue linkia perish in my tank. It seemed to be doing great and it just started shriveling up until it started decomposing. I've heard too much bad news about them now to the point where I am hesitant to try another linkia. Some say that they starve, some say they shouldn't be exposed to air, some say that they are just doomed. I do have a serpent star that is doing great and I am happy with although it's not nearly as pretty (it's just poop brown but a very cool critter. ).
One thing I must point out is that I've heard, but don't take my word for it, that red linkias have better survival rates than blue ones.
And lastly, if it's just a bright star you're looking for, someone here (Unarce, maybe? :? ) has a beautiful RED serpent star! Check it out!
I've read that red Linckias are more versatile feeders than the blue, that they will raise their arms and act as filter feeders to supplement whatever they get from scouring surfaces. But there's one aquarium store online that claims blue Linckias do that too.
Thanks for the pointer, I will try to learn more about the red ones and how blues are kept successfully. I'm pretty obsessed with the blue ones. I remember the first time I saw them while snorkeling -- I had to be dragged away to look at corals cuz everyone else got sick of the boring shallow lagoon with nothing but rubble, sea grass, and blue stars --- I happily stared at them for hours.
hey blue, orange and red linkias are terrible to keep. I have tried all three and no success at all.
as for the post I saw about a shrimp eating one. I had that happen also
i had a camel back shrimp destroy a linkia in a day
I saw a calico linkia the other day and It looked like a more stable starfish.
if you want some color, look into a red bali star, i think they are a little more heartly. anybody have one? I would like to know how they hold up
thanks
