Hello,

I'm new to this board, and i'm also new to the reef keeping hobby. Before i mainly delt with fish only but i wanted to try a reef.

My reef tank is 140 gallons 48 X 24 X 29(height)

My question is if anyone can give me advice about using distilled water for my aquarium(for topping off and water changes). Can i use it or is it not a good idea.

thank you

Hi and :welcome:

Distilled is generally fine to use but most of us eventually get an RO or RO/DI unit as it tends to be the cheapest source of pure water in the long run.

Agreed, I just got mine 3 days ago. Prior to that I was using Glacier water from the grocery store. Needless to say that water testes .18 on my tds meter.. Funny thing is I have been wondering why my glass needs to be cleaned daily. RO/DI all the way for me.

hey doni, can you give me some info on your r/o unit? I am getting one for christmas and I know there has to be alot more to it than just buying an r/o unit. what else is there besides the tank and the unit. I was also wondering about d/i also, is R/o good enough? any help would be good.
I'll send this in a private message incase you don't see this post.

thanks for the advice, but just a curious question. What would be the reason a ro machine would be cheaper than a distiller machine in the long run?

Distiller use quite a bit of electricity to operate. Unless you have good, cheap source of energy, like the Saudi or near a water fall for hydro power, it is going to cost you more.

As to the machine near gocery store, they put it out there to make a profit. Most people are better of getting a RO filter and keep it in good shape themselves. But if you like the convenience, you will have to pay for it.
