Just wanted to get an opinion on Maxi Jet pumps....

I am setting up a new 40gal tank and I'll be running a return pump from my sump to the display area of the tank. I planning on having a maxi-jet 1200 for the return pump. Then I was thinking about having another 1200 in the display tank for more circulation. My question is would this be "overkill" flow in my tank?

I plan on having a pair of clowns and an RTBA, and once that's established some SPS corals.

Any suggestions are appreciated. Thank you

I tend to think that a maxijet 1200 won't be nearly strong enough for a return pump. Maybe you should consider a mag 7 or so. If you have a RBTA and want SPS it definately wont be overkill.

So with an anemone and SPS ultimately, a mag 7 for a return pump and an addional maxi-jet 1200 pump in the display tank would be a suitable circulation set-up for my tank? Pumps are pretty much it and then I can start filling up the tank and adding my substrate.

I think you will be good to start with the Mag7 and MJ1200. You can always add additional MJ's if the need arrises.

May be this is a silly question but I am new to marine tanks. I just bought 2 MJ1200 to go with my 30 gal tank hooked up to a wave maker. The question is do I connect to air hose or leave it without? I have a prism skimmer that should help with O2ing with water.

Thanks Bruce

If you are just using them in the tank for circulation I would not attach the air hose.

I also want to clarify that my 40 gal tank is "drilled" i think the term is for it; in which the sump is within the tank. (the sump is on the backside which is blocked off by a black acrylic wall, and contains various chambers for filtration.)

I have to check again to see if a mag 7 will fit, but will a mag suffice for this setup still?

Thanks

Yes, For SPS and an anenome you need to try to get 30-40x turnover in the tank. The mag will get you about 700GPH and the maxijet gets under 300GPH more. That leaves you shy of 30x but would be a good start.

unfortunately, a mag 7 (nor a 5) will not fit in my return chamber in my sump. It's just a hair too big. Is there any other pump that is just as powerful but smaller out on the market?

What other options do I have? Can I add another bulk head to my return chamber so that I have two return pumps which will be using 2 maxi-jet 1200's?
