Well, distilled water is better than water straight from the tap.
Is there any RO machine near the gocery store? These kind of machines should be popular in California. Usually, it is $1 for 5 gal jug, or 0.25 per gallon.

i would not reccomend using any water from the vending machine at supermarkets. i started my tank 7 months ago and i am just now gaining ground over the HA that 3mo of using water from said machines. adding water that has 0.05 phosphates when trying to remove nutrients with WC tends to completely defeat the purpose of water changes. i was near the point of either cooking my live rock or cutting my losses and give up.
thankfully with the aid of rowa-phos, macroalgae, and clean water from the LFS my p04 under control. as bad as it sounds i never thought i would be so happy to see my snails go hungry. with all the time, effort, and frustration i experianced taken into consideration, paying $1 a gal or paying $100 for your own RO/DI unit will further ensure success of your tank.
