Hello all
I have a 55 gal with LR. I'm in the process of going Reef. My concern is about 2 hawkfish I have. 1 arc eye and 1 spotted. They are no more than 2 inches big. My question is, I would like to get some shrimp. IE= cleaner and camel. I understand that the larger hawkfish might prey on these shrimp but what about the smaller ones. Also will they bother any Coral I may purchase?
I appreciate the advice.

First of all, :welcome:

Im far from an expert here but, Your hawkfish will eventually grow and MAY eat your cleaner shrimp when it is hungry or in a bad mood. The key word is "may" there are always exceptions to every rule.

First of, welcome to reef.org!!! :D

They should leave your corals alone. As far as shrimp go, I would personally go with bigger shrimp to make sure they don't look like food for the hawks. Also, keep in mind any small fish, crabs, snails, and other small creatures in the tank.

Good luck!

I had a 4 inch maybe bigger lunar Wrasse a while back, Once he saw my Cleaner shrimp it took him 3 seconds to kill it. I brought the Wrasse right back to the LFS.I wish I would have had a heads up from them.Thats why I'm asking before doing. I had the same 2 hawkfish in the tank at the same time and they never bothered the cleaner shrimp. The cleaner shrimp are averaging $19.99 in my area so it makes me cautious.

Hawk fish are predators, when they get bigger they will most likely try to have a Shrimp dinner.I used to have about a 4 inch one who would Wolf down small Minnows.Any shrimp might be okay now but in 3 to 6 months they wont be.

Thank's for the adivce. I have had feshwater for 25 plus years and decided last year to take the plunge into saltwater. I went with FOWLR. I can't believe I wasted my time for so long with feshwater. Lol Now it's time to take another plunge into making a reef tank. It's good to know that sound Advice is just a click away. I'm sure you will be hearing from me alot more. I have spent so much money so far, why stop now.

:D

Thanks
