Hello,

I'm attempting to get into this hobby as a way to spend some quality time with my family and as a means for learning new things with my children. I have 3 small kids that like to get into things so I'm trying to keep my tank setup as simple as possible, and keep it straight forward for myself (since I am new to reefs). This is what I'm thinking:

-50 Gallon Acrylic Tank (I understand they scratch easier, but I like the strength benefits and the cool looks)
-3 or so Inches of Live Sand for filtration
-Live Rock for filtration
-Hang on Protein Skimmer (Still reseaching brands)
-Power Compact Lighting (Still researching brands)
-Various other necessary items (heater, powerheads, etc.)

I don't want much in the tank....mainly live rock, clean up critters, etc. As far as fish, I'm thinking a small anemone with a clown or 2, then no more than 2-3 other small fish. I'd also like a few soft corals.

Will this setup work well? I don't want to get too complicated with overflows, sumps, etc. Also, my goal is not to overload the tank with fish and wildlife. So, eventhough this may not be the "optimal" setup, if I keep it simple and not overload wildlife will it work well?

Thanks!

Agreed. No reason why this shouldn't work. Just come back for recommendations on details as and when you need them. :)

For a great, inexpensive fish for this tank I would recomend a royal gramma (fairy basslet). Mine was ~$16 and is hardy and beautiful.
