If they are totally submerged you shouldn't need the caps over the air intake ports (since they're underwater anyway) and you definitely don't need the air supply lines.

How far under the surface are they submerged?
Any chance air bubbles are accumulating somewhere on the bottom of the pumps?
(Sometimes this can happen which forms a large bubble that periodically gets sucked into the intake - thus the burst of bubbles).
How long have you been using these pumps?

I would think that they must be getting air somehow. Are they close to the suface and sucking air from the surface? I like Chris's theory of air gradually accumilating on the bottom of the pump. Try turning the pumps on their sides??

seriously is it that bad? air bubbles are accumulating somewhere inside the pump until it builds up and releases then you see the burst! what other things are going on in your tank? do you have something putting out alot of micro bubbles somewhere else that is accumulating in your powerheads? lol, maybe you are running your skimmer 24/7 like 92% of the people on here lol BTW you all converted Mr.X to a 24/7 so it must be 99% now i guess. anyhow bubbles are building up in your powerheads, some power heads have a foam shield that goes over the intake of the pump this may help out. I have these bursts too but it doesn't sound to be as frequest as yours are since they are driving you crazy, how long has the tank been running? I noticed that these bursts happened alot more frequently before my tank was well established. now they are much more infrequent. good luck

chris RD makes a point, if they are submerged why are they capped? if they are capped maybe this is how air is getting trapped in the pumps, take off the caps and see how it is after that.
btw how long has this been going on and how long has the tank been running????

have took caps off. still doing it. tank has been up 1 1/2 years.powerheads2months am going to try turning them sideways.they are not real bad but does make my tank look cloudy.it use to be so clear.i do notice some little bubbles on the bootomof them.it seems like it comes and gos.when one does it it seems like they all start to do it and then they may not do it for awhile.sure wood like to figure it out before i have to throw them away and start over. going to have lfs owner come over and check it out.any other ideas, will try anything

Any luck with those bubbles? I get them too, but not as often as you seem too. I agree they are very aggravating. Let me know what does the trick for you and I will try it.. Thanks

I would try to unplug the two no namers and see if the maxi jet causes any problems. Id bet that the impellers on your no nameer are chopping the water with the impeller, literally tearing the water apart creating bubbles. I had a zoo-med power sweep do that a while back. About once ever few minutes it would send out a surge of micro bubbles that came from nowhere.

How about a closed loop system. :D

It is a way of circulating water.

Simply put, a water intake, a pump, and a couple returns. It is a closed system as opposed to an open system like a sump. If you do a search here you will find alot of threads about them if your interested.
