So I have a 20 gallon long with 2 firefish gobies, about 20 lbs of LR, normal sand etc etc. But here is my question. I was wondering if an overflow box or sump/refugium is necessary for a tank this size. And what would i do for a refugium, I don't really understand the concept behind refugium on a small tank. The image I have is that a refugium is an overflow box with stuff inside of it. Is this correct? And if so, what kind of refugium do I need? Should I DIY or buy one? Where from? All tank parameters are fine. Tomorrow is payday so any help before I go wild buying unnecessary equipment would be greatly appreciated. I have many more questions pertaining to my tank tho. Thank you all

A refugium is not a must for any tank. Lights, pumps, LR and water changes are all that are absolutely necessary. A skimmer is a huge bonus for any tank and a refugium is also a nice optionas you can help reduce nutrient and help offset Ph swings. For a 20G tank I would by a premade fuge. Maybe one like this http://www.premiumaquatics.com/Merchant ... gory_Code=

If you do not have one a good hang on back (HOB) skimmer would be a much better investment. I agree with trido that a refugium is not necessary on any system.

yeap, a refugium isn't mandatory, but the extra water volume, along with the macros, will make your tank more "forgiving". if you have the space and can afford to, it certainly wouldn't hurt. i would suggest a skimmer before a 'fuge also. i am getting an "aqua c remora" for my 30 cube

You will lower the temperature with a sump ,ref, definitely help with the p/h, and adding the macros you'll lose your nitrates . You said your tank was doing fine so do more study, you will be surprised what people build ,and they function very well, and you can keep your payday.
