Phosphate reactors.

I am going to attach a phosphate reactor to my sump. Going to put rowaphos in it. Anyone got any advice about these units? Can they have an adverse affect upon the tank? I have been told that they are a good thing to have in your system, but have just read that they can be detremental. I have bought one and was going to install.

You might want to let the inital flow through the reactor run into a bucket or something. GFOs need a bit of rinsing or else you'll end-up with a bunch of rust colored "dust" in your tank.

Also, if you have sensitive corals in the tank you might want to start off with a bit less (say half) than the recommended quantity for your size tank. In establishded tanks where a phosphate reactor has never been run, sometimes the sudden drop in phosphate levels can cause trouble with some corals. Also, keep an eye on your Alk levels as it may intially pull those down too.

I was looking into the rowaphos, it apparently does not affect the ph or release anything back into the system. My tank is not set up yet and i was going to run it from the very begining. Thanks for the tip about rinsing it, would it be best to use RO water. I was thinking about placing it into some material and pouring water over the rowa, would that be ok. Thanks.

Rinsing it as you describe should work fine.
