Sounds like diatoms maybe. How long has the tank been set up? Are you using RO/DI water?

Ninnybone,

I had the same thing. What are your nitrates at? A partial water change wiith RO and if you don't have a fuge consider one. After 2 weeks mine has all but gone and now the coraline is taking off.

Me too. The last tiime I changed my bulbs I had a small diatom outbreak. New bulbs have been known to start algea outbreaks. Diatoms should pass without intervention.

I've had the same problem for 2 years! I can clean the sand and the brown stuff is back within hours. I've been using RO\DI for six months now and no change. I'll post some pics later today. I am almost to the point of going bare bottom.
