I p0sted this I think in the wrong forum , I suspect I should Have done it here...

Hello
I wanted to clarify a little about the quarantine tank

Is this tank totally separate from the main systems or can it be "inline" with other systems, ??
To isolate totally the system or can it be built within and utilize main system infanstructure

I am now convinced that a qt is needed and just wanted to design,
and was wondering if I need to buy separate system equipment, or incorporate into present design
I had noted in Mr-X tank thread he seemed to be utilizing his sump as a
segregation system for some fish, am I confusing these two separate ideas
http://www.reefs.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.p ... &start=160
thanks in advance

It would be isolated - otherwise the nasties (cryptocarian, etc) would flow into your display tank. Some people might siphon their current tank water into the QT so that they get the same PH and salinity. Also, if you use copper (as a medication) you wouldn't want that flowing back into your tank where your corals are, right? :P

i am segregating the fish simply for "refugium" reasons. they need a refuge. otherwise i fear the percula will fight with the maroon, and the 1 inch hipo will get the living daylights kicked out of him by the 4" tangs.

i do have a completely seperate QT tank.

You don't have to go crazy with a QT tank, so it's generally actually easier to keep it separate. For mine, I just use a 10g WalMart tank (about $10 I believe), a HOB powerfilter (Aquaclear. . .maybe $30 new), a small heater when it's cold, and ambient lighting. When I do my weekly water changes on my main tank, I just use that water for my QT water changes, since I'm not worried about having pristine water parameters for fish only. Then, if everything goes to hell, and the new fish gets sick, I can just treat him in the same tank, which then forever becomes my hospital tank. Since the whole setup is relatively cheap, you're not out much if you don't want to risk ever using that tank again for a healthy fish (I wouldn't).

thanks ,
I was going to get a small heater say 100w too 200w
and power jet that I would also use to cure the rock when I begin this whole Reef tank
very soon,
after it cures the rock I will use in the QTanK.
I will also get 0r DIY a hang on Fuge ,if this is kool for the QTank?
I am interested in the hanG on fuges anyways .
tanks is a is 40 or 30 tall all glass.

i don't think you'll need or want a hang on fuge. not on the QT tank anyway. unless you would be disconnecting and removing it in the event that you need to dose the tank with meds like copper. if that happens, you'll probably want to never hook it back up to the copper tank either.

i think you'd probably be better off with a simple hang on sponge filter like previously stated.

if you really like them, use a HOB fuge for your main display, if you can get one big enough.
