After 3 1/2 weeks of live rock, sitting, growing, it was all perfect, correct. One coral (green star polyp) was added with a small clean up crew, just to see what they would do. Maybe 10 or so crabs, mostly blue legs. And I saw him...

A medium sized crab that I can only describe as 'hairy'. Emerged from the rock. As soon as I can get a shot of him I will, but it was totally out of nowhere. I've monitored perhaps a small sponge, a couple small 'feather dusters' blossoming from the live rock that I got, but I totallly didn't expect this guy making it, me being the amatuer and all. .

So I'm concerned. I want him to make it, and I'm thinking of getting some shrimp, perhaps cutting it up, and putting it in the tank, just to see if he'll come out from his elusvie hiding place and eat it. Is this a good idea or ?

There is another, that I haven't produced a proper name for yet.
Some serpant like (incorrectly bristleworm?) critter that lives in another rock. There are three serpent like tenticles that emerge at times, as if they are fishing for particulate in the water to feed upon. Checking what I could from here with some links to aquarium.net being dead, a 'medusa' is the only thing the describes it at this point. Yet another elusive critter to which I'll hopefully snap a picture of when I see it again.

Just thought I would share a thought, and show my appreciation for this site. Hopefully I can get some pictures to further enforce the story.

No problems feeding your crab. Good luck :)

Can't say for certain without a picture, but I'm guessing the serpent thing is a brittle (serpent) star. They sit in a hole and stick out their arms to grab food. He goes under you cleanup crew category.

I always liked looking for the strange little critters that emerged from my live rock. It's exciting.

Have fun and keep us posted :D

Pictures are always nice.

The Brittle stars eat Detrius (leftover food, poop, etc.) If you ever think it's not getting enough, you can put a peice of shimp on a toothpick and touch it to the end of one of it's arms. It'll take the shimp off and bring it towards its mouth.

What color is this star?

I'm pretty sure it's a Mithrax type crab that made it through. I found his 'spots', now and can usually find him at least once a day. He's about the size of a silver dollar.

As for the star. It's white with black banding from the best I can tell. This thing lives INSIDE a rock. All I've ever seen of it are a couple tenticles.

I've tried to get some shots, but I'm still mastering 'underwater' photography:

Those brittle stars are harmless detrivores.

As for the crab, see if you can observe it's pincers. If the tips of the claws are sharp, it's a good idea to catch it just for peace of mind. If the tips are dish/saucer shaped, these are likely harmless. These types of mitrax use these special claws to scrape algae off the rocks.

The crab definitely has rounded pinchers. He's pretty 'hairy' too. I'm glad to hear that he's mostly harmless. I've been keeping an eye on the other corals in my tank, to make sure that he's not been munching on anything. He stays tucked up underneath a rock mostly, and I've only seen him eating detrius from the sand and a small piece of shrimp that I put into the tank.

I'll keep trying to get a shot of him though, just for completeness in this post. (c:
