I have a 120 gallon set-up now. 29g sump.

When I started this in April I went with the plenum advice. I currently have a 2 inch sand bed on top of 3 inches of crushed coral which sits on a 2 in plenum. I have about 130 pounds of rock.

I want to remove the plenum and crushed coral and just go with a 4 inch sand bed.

Any advice before I start dismantling?

I have a spare 90g and 55g I'm going to use.

Fill 90 half with new salt water. Top with "old salt water" to hold rock and fish.

Fill 55 half with new water and top with "old salt water" to hold corals and rock.

Put sand in buckets.
Remove crushed coral, clean bottom.
Add sand and fill back with water, rock and critters.

Should I put new sand on top of old sand or the other way around? Make a difference?

Any thoughts guys?

I'm also thinking on this. I have a tri-level house. The way it sits now I could run my 120 upstairs and set my 90 downstairs and use the 55 as a sump/fuge for both. Lookin around I see I have the equipment to do it. Practical?

IMO go to lowes or home depot and buy five 33 gal. trash cans and use them for the water and rocks. If you have 5 gal buckets (clean) use them for the sand. Get ride of the crush stuff and put the stuff back together the way you want to. You can put the old sand in first or on top of new it dosent matter. It is what you think is best.
After you are all done wash the cans up and take them back
