i don't know what kind of overflow you got, but hopefully this helps. You want to pour water in where I drew arrows in. At the same time start sucking or use a aqualifter to siphon it. It will get it started immediately.

If that siphon loses siphon it will stop overflowing. You can either insert the end of the hose into the sump. When its submerged in the water it will not lose siphon. I use an aqualifter just in case.

hope this helps.

with the type of overflow mrktplayer posted, yes, you do just that. that requires the aqualifter pump which will do the sucking for you.

with the J tube style, you'll need a piece of airline tubing. shove the tubing up inside the J tube, then put it in place. make sure the overflow is filled so that both ends of the J tube are submerged. now put your mouth on the end of the airline tubing and suck out the air. then remove the airline tubing when the siphon starts.
