I just set up my tank 4 days ago and I've been monitoring all the levels and I am seeing the temp. in the tank rise (83 when I last checked). I have decreased the amount of light and turned the heater off, what is the next step? Is it the heat from the pumps?

Heat from pump can be substantial. Each watt of pump is same as one watt of heater on constantly.

However, you do need to keep the water moving. See if you can use evaporative cooling to keep the temperature in control, otherwise, you may need to look into chiller, etc.

Thanks for the advice, what exactly do you mean by evaporative cooling?

As water is evaporated from the tank, it cools the tank in the process. To make the cooling effect more dramatic, some reefer put fan over the sump/tank and increase the air circulation.

It work better in a dry climate, like part of California/Nevada, but not as well in Florida/Carolinia. Ever heard of swamp cooler?

I would think that the MOST PROBABLE problem is that the heat is coming from your LIGHTING. What kinda light are you running?

one of the easiest temp fixes in the hobby is to just buy a fan from walmart to blow on the top of the water....


also aids what dupa says..large water area exposure to air... surface agitation ... = lower temps
