Hello All,

Am a little confused after reading all that I can find on ecotanks and reef tanks.

We have the understanding that an ecosystem tank can be set up using 'miracle mud' and live sand. This would be used to feed/ biologically filter the main tank where anemones, corals and creatures would live. This could then be chemically filtered using a HOB filter and a flow added along with high intensity lighting.

Also is it possible to use a single tank where an overly deep bottom of mud and sand mixture can be used as an ecosystem?

Will this setup be ok in your opinion and do I still need to use salt as I am going to be using an eco system with miracle mud?

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Tetradon :)

I'm a bit confused as to what an ecotank is... I can't fathom why you wouldn't need salt!

Here is my take on the whole situation.... IMO I would stick to setting up a nice sized display with a sump underneath.

NO HOB filter. IMO a GOOD skimmer (NOT a seaclone or a prism) and LR are all the filtration you would probably need. For skimmers check out AquaC's and Octopus Skimmers for the cost concious... Euroreef...Deltec and others if cost isn't a huge concern. I'm also not a fan of deep sand beds DSBs.. the debate of these is ongoing. As far as substrate goes I really don't think you can go wrong with argonite. Personally I've never used "live" sand.. and think you'll be just fine without it as long as your LR is allowed mature correctly.

As far as miricle mud goes... I wouldnt use it to coat the inside of my septic tank with. You will get plenty of biodiversity and bacteria as your tank matures.

As for lighting it completely depends on what you want to keep.. If you are planning on an aneome and other light hungry organisms I would suggest MH.. and the amount will be dictated by the depth and other measurements of your setup.

GL to you!

I agree with Snowman on the miracle mud. I tried to use it once and it sucked. Not only that but its hard as hell to get out of your tank once you put it in. Another thing to watch out for is GARF Grunge, unless specially contained in your sump within a confined area.
