I just traded in my Euroreef Protein skimmer for a Coralife Protein skimmer 225....Was this a good choice. What have you heard for the Coralife protein skimmer? I saved about 150 dollars as the Coralife is used but in good condition.

Also, do you guys think that a two 3 pump Hydor Koralia Powerheads is too much circulation for my 54 gallon aquarium? I have two conflicting opinions, at one fish store the guy recommends a 2 and at another a guy reccomends a 3....

i have koralia 3s in my 55 gallon and they work fine. It seems that you can never have too much flow. you want to eliminate dead spots stir nutrients as much as possible.

I would definitely go with 3s, at least. I have a 3 in my 20g frag tank. I doubt even a 4 would be too much. Personally, I like the Maxijets with the Sure Flow and sure grip modifications better than the Korallias though. They seem to have more flow and are a little smaller. I have 1 of these with a maxijet 1200 on my 70g reef and it is plenty of flow. You could probably go with one of the smaller maxi-jets and be fine.

I don't know that I would have traded a Euro-reef for a Coralife skimmer. I've heard the Coralifes are OK, but Euroreefs are supposed to be one of the best skimmers on the market. I'm a little biased due to bad experiences with some of Coralife's other products that I have used in years past.

the problem I had with the Euroreef RS80 was that it HAD to be submersible, it was taller than hell and bulky taking up a ton of my sump space, and it seemed to not have anyway to pump the water in, that is the intake had no filter on it and I wondered how the bubbles would have gotten to the top. Its pump looked real nice but I know that the Coralife I traded for is built for a 200 gallon tank and it was only 75 bucks versus the 300 dollars I payed for the Eurolife. I think it was a good trade as it will skim my tank great and give me more sump space.

As for the powerheads, I have heard that the Koralias are the best on the market.

i have two koralia #3's and one #4 in my 90 mixed reef. i love them. i used to have maxi-jets but they kept heating up my water. i switched over to koralias and saw a 3 degree temp drop.

you just can't beat the price. they are comparable to seios and tunze in my opinion and are much cheaper.

The Koralias are probably the best un-modified powerhead for the price, however I have used both and I know that the modified maxi-jets pump considerably more water, are smaller, comparible in price, and use less wattage. I don't see how they could be heating up the water more when they use less wattage.

I think the amount of flow really depends on what you want to keep. If it's Acros, you may want to consider 2. If it is low flow corals such as Alveopora. Euphyllia, etc. 1 may be plenty. I know 1 modified Maxi-jet would be plenty.

the issue with the koralias is that they are large. 6" from the glass to the end of the pump. they are going to look big in your 54. i suggest modded mj's for that size tank.

Since you asked i DO think that 3 or 4 would be too much in a 54g tank. :) Even modded mjs would be too much if you had 3 or 4 in there.

The EXCEPTION would be if you had an sps tank going on. I just kind of see it irritating your lps corals and so forth.

I had a TUNZE stream in my 65g cube and traded it in just because it was WAY too much current.

SnowManSnow,

So what do you think I should get for this tank? I am only doing soft corals and fish. One Koralia 3? Two Koralia 2's???
