I didn't really put thought into this but the lady is concerned.

Will this be a problem / what have you done to prevent this?

I have a 46gal aquarium and a 20 gallon (10-15gallons full) sump.

So I am looking for those who have those size tanks or larger and your experiences.

Thanks.

Mine did at the begining, but once the live rock was cured and tank settled I can't smell it now. The smell was there for only about a week or so and now I can only smell it if stick my nose to the top of the tank.

Just remind her that it is just like the ocean... Then make her a pina colada, so that you can both sit back and relax while watching your private ocean viewing window!

I've never had any noticeable smell from an established tank. As mentioned, rock curing can be an issue...

Other than curing rock, the only other thing that I've had reek is skimmate (when I cleaned the cup). Found the best way to stop that was to put a large dose of kalkwasser in the cup every week after I cleaned it. Stuff is so alkaline that the stinky bacteria can't seem to grow in it.

If you have a sand bed and stir it up that can create a rely nasty sour smell, or at least for me it did lol. Thats the only bad smell i have had in mine except during startup.

Also, after the system has been in your house for a while, even if there is a small bit of smell, your nose will get used to it and the smell will fade into the background. Running carbon can also help alleviate smells, however, a correctly running tank does not normally smell.
