I guess I do not know what else to call it.

My levels are all fine, and as a whole my tank looks clean. The only scuff I have is with my water. At the moment there is a bit of floating material. I presume it could me ruminants from fish feeding.

I do believe I feed my single clown fish too much as he does not eat it all, but I have not worried about this too much since I never see any levels increase.

Anyways, it was worse about 2 weeks ago and now the tanks water is looking better, I also removed a lot of hair algae could be the reason. I put n a phosphate killer in between my baffles so everything going into the sump either goes into there and gets stuck, or presumably goes into my recently installed protein skimmer.

Is there anything else I can do short of a water change that can help clean up the water?

I also have a second thread about hair algae which may relate to this.

I occationally get stuff on the surface of my water too. It can look like colored shimmery stuff like gasoline on water or it can be a white precipitate.

If this sounds like what you're seeing, it's probably protein junk collecting at the surface. It a natural process, but it can cause problems by blocking gas exchange if it gets too bad. The solution it to make waves somehow and break up the water at the surface.

thats exactly it. When looking from the surface down i do not see anything but from say the side glass pane up it looks almost gasolineish.

Ill keep the gas exchange in mind.
